Egg Freezing
What Is Egg Freezing?
Egg freezing is an advanced way to preserve your reproductive potential and prevent future infertility. Your doctor will retrieve your viable eggs from your ovaries and store them at sub-zero temperatures. Once you are ready to start your family, the frozen eggs are thawed and then used in an in vitro fertilization (IVF) cycle.
What Is IVF?
IVF is a common treatment for infertility, as well as a means of avoiding having certain genetic issues affect your pregnancy. The eggs are removed from the ovaries and fertilized in a lab. The resulting embryos are then implanted into the uterus. With egg freezing, your eggs are frozen before fertilization, and the IVF cycle takes place only when you are ready to start your family.
Why Should You Freeze Your Eggs?
Aging
Women are born with a finite number of eggs. As women age into their 30's, their reproductive capability declines and both the quantity and the quality of their eggs diminish. This diminishment increases the risk of chromosomal abnormalities as well as the risk of miscarriage. Freezing preserves the integrity of the eggs, thus reducing these risks without you having to worry about your biological clock.
Priorities
Many women need to delay having children for a multitude of reasons like financial stability, career advancement, and waiting for the right partner. By freezing your eggs, you can freely pursue education and a career, and know that you can have children when you are ready. Egg freezing also takes the pressure out of dating for those who have yet to find the right person. You no longer have to feel like you are racing to beat an unrealistic deadline. Instead, you are allowing yourself to become settled in your own life before you have a child.
Health Issues
Women fighting severe health issues such as cancer or autoimmune disease should consider freezing their eggs since these conditions can cause infertility. It is recommended you freeze your eggs before undergoing chemotherapy or radiation as the harshness of these treatments can have a major impact on your fertility. This is especially important for women who will receive radiation in the pelvic area, as radiation can damage the eggs. By freezing your eggs, you increase your chances of having a biological child when you are healthy enough to do so.

Women in their 20s and 30s are typically the best candidates for fertility preservation. These are a woman’s most fertile years, and yield greater numbers of eggs harvested. The earlier you freeze your eggs, the higher your chances of having a successful birth after implantation.
How To Prepare For Freezing Your Eggs
Find an Experienced Doctor
Finding a fertility clinic with a track record of success and safety in reproductive medicine is essential. It is also important to find a doctor who can answer all your questions about the process and the cost of treatment before undergoing egg freezing. Our doctors at Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine take the time to get to know each patient and offer luxury amenities to ensure the whole process is as stress-free as possible.
Ovarian Reserve Testing
This is used to test the quality and quantity of your eggs and to help predict how well your ovaries will respond to the fertility medication before harvesting. Ovarian reserve testing is conducted through blood testing and occasionally a vaginal ultrasound to determine ovarian function.
Testing for Infectious Diseases
Before you can freeze your eggs, your doctor will need to test you for any infectious diseases such as HIV, hepatitis B and C, and other STDs. An active infection increases the risk of general infection during the egg freezing procedure, which can put your fertility at risk.
The Egg Freezing Process What to Expect
You can expect the egg freezing process to take about two complete menstrual cycles to complete.
We recommend freezing between 10 and 20 eggs per cycle because just 5 to 6 viable embryos typically result from every 10 eggs.

After the Retrieval
Plan to rest for the remainder of the day after your procedure, as well as the next day. Most patients can resume work and other normal activities within a few days of the egg retrieval. It is normal to feel mild cramping, bloating, or pressure since your ovaries will become enlarged after the procedure. These symptoms can last for about a week after your eggs are harvested.
You should call your doctor if you are experiencing:
- A high fever
- Heavy bleeding
- Gaining more than 2.2 pounds within 24 hours
- Severe abdominal pain
- Difficulty urinating
