Fertility Tests
What Is Fertility Testing?
Our practice offers a variety of fertility tests to help our doctors find the cause behind your infertility. While there's not always an apparent reason for infertility, testing allows our specialists to explore and rule out possible causes of infertility. We can narrow down treatment options and increase your chances of pregnancy by knowing what factors are and aren't causing your fertility complications.
Blood Tests For Hormone Levels
Follicle-Stimulating Hormone
For women, follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) levels fluctuate throughout the menstrual cycle and reach a high right before ovulation. Low or high levels could indicate low egg quantity, loss of ovarian function, PCOS, or other reproductive concerns. FSH levels don't fluctuate much for men, and a low or high level could indicate a concern with sperm production.
Estradiol
An estradiol (E2) test measures the hormone estradiol, a form of estrogen. An abnormal estradiol level in a woman may indicate a decreasing ovarian reserve. In men, a small amount of estradiol is released from the testes to protect the sperm from dying too quickly.
Anti-Müllerian Hormone
An anti-müllerian hormone (AMH) test can help determine how large a biological female's ovarian reserve is, but not the health of the eggs in your ovaries. AMH tests can also give our doctors an idea of how your body will respond to fertility treatments and determine the proper dose of fertility drugs.
Luteinizing Hormone
A luteinizing hormone (LH) test is often performed with an FSH test to explore menstrual changes and ovulation. In men, abnormal LH levels may indicate the reason for a low sex drive or low sperm count.
Thyroid-Stimulating Hormone
Thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) tests are performed to learn your thyroid levels. Hyperthyroidism can cause reduced sperm count, density, motility, and morphology, while hypothyroidism can reduce sperm morphology. Irregular thyroid levels in women can interfere with the menstrual cycle and the release of the egg.
Sperm Testing
Our Omaha office offers semen analysis, processing, and morphology tests to find the cause behind male-factor infertility. Sperm testing can assess the following factors:
- Volume
- Concentration
- Motility
- Morphology
- Sperm DNA Fragmentation
Additional Sperm Testing
Along with a semen analysis, our doctors may recommend a postcoital test (PCT). A PCT examines the interaction between the sperm and cervical mucus. Results can indicate concerns with the viscosity of the cervical mucus or the sperm's motility through the cervical fluid.
